Why you should try Cupping

Updated: Sep 25

Cupping is one of Chinese medicine's oldest treatment techniques and is still used today as it was thousands of years ago. In cupping a flame draws the air out of a cup (glass jar) which is placed on certain acupuncture points on the body. The suction draws blood to the area, stimulating circulation and, as with other Chinese medicine techniques, helps to unblock trapped and stagnant energy.
Cupping has become well known in recent years due to its exposure at Olympic events when athletes such as Michael Phelps were seen with the tell tale temporary circular marks that are visible on the skin following treatment.

What is cupping used for?
In Chinese medicine, cupping is used to release stagnation in the body and to support blood circulation. Here are six reasons why you might want to give it a go.
Six reasons to try cupping
1. Swollen, painful or stiff joints. Cupping is traditionally used to support blood circulation and where there is pain or muscle tension.
2. Colds and flu. In Chinese medicine cupping is traditionally used where there is a cough with phlegm on the chest.
3. It is traditionally used to support the immune system by moving blood and lymphatic fluid through the body.

4. Relaxation. Cupping can feel similar to a deep tissue massage, and many people find it relaxes muscle tension and helps with stress.
5. Cleansing. In Chinese medicine, poor circulation is thought to allow a build-up of toxins in the tissues, and cupping is traditionally used to help clear it.
6. The skin. In Chinese medicine cupping is traditionally used for skin complaints such as acne, and is thought to help bring circulation to the skin. Many people say their skin looks fresher afterwards.
