Treat PMS & Painful periods with Acupuncture & TCM

Updated: 2 days ago

Dysmenorrhea or period pain is estimated to affect around 25% - 50% of adult women and up to 75% of adolescents. Symptoms can include cramping, pain in the lower abdomen, pain in the lower back, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, fatigue and anxiety. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and at times the pain can be so debilitating it prevents women from carrying on with their normal daily activities. In some cases there may be no apparent health related conditions causing the pain but in others the pain may be the result of a health related disorder such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts.

Looking for a natural option
If there is no apparent underlying cause to the pain it can leave many women feeling helpless and frustrated. Western medicine treatments include the contraceptive pill and painkillers such as Ibuprofen. For many women however these options are less than ideal and they would like to find a natural treatment which not only treats the pain, but treats the underlying cause of the condition.
How Chinese medicine sees period pain
From a Chinese medicine perspective painful periods can result from qi (energy) or blood flow stagnation. Basically it can be the result of stagnant blood not moving properly. In Chinese medicine, acupuncture is traditionally used to support blood flow to the reproductive organs, where hormones are out of balance, and where there is inflammation or stress. Our practitioners often use a combination of acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion and herbs, as this is the mix they most often find helpful here. Acupuncture is used to support circulation and to help the uterine muscle relax. Acupuncture, moxibustion and herbs are traditionally used to warm the blood, support blood flow and regulate the function of organ systems.
A Chinese medicine approach works on the root cause and aims to give longer-lasting relief. Our practitioners at Care Cure have treated many women with period pain, cramps, PMS, endometriosis and fibroids. Responses vary from person to person.
